RECREATION

Silverado Ranch Park offers softball fields, a multi-use field, a skate park, various picnic shelters and pavilions, barbecue areas, a walking track, a tot lot and playground, and an amphitheater. Hosting many community-based activities, the park is an attraction that can be enjoyed by every age group.

Just minutes away, the Lake Mead National Recreation Area is the most frequented National Recreation Area in the United States. Established on October 8, 1964, it is a man made lake created by the Hoover Dam. With over 1.5 million acres dedicated to the park, Lake Mead covers less than 13 percent of the total area of the park. Lake Mead consists of five basins, each with its own unique features. Within these basins Lake Mead can store almost two years' average flow from the Colorado River. Geographically, Lake Mead is located where the Mojave Desert, the Great Basin, and the Sonoran Desert meet. Visitors can enjoy all that Lake Mead has to offer year-round whether it is camping, fishing, boating, day hiking, observing wildlife, or picnicking.

Nearby North Shore Road offers a gorgeous desert drive that takes one roughly 40 miles from Lake Mead Blvd to Overton Beach. Stop off at the Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada's oldest state park dedicated in 1935, along the way. The red sandstone formations that gave this park its name is part of the Aztec Formation found throughout the Southwest. Once home to the ancient Anasazi, the Valley of Fire, petroglyphs and archeological remains tell tales of age-old ceremonies. The Lost City Museum is built on the ruins of an Anasazi pueblo and houses a complete collection of such artifacts. The mystery of this ancient peoples' disappearance is still unsolved.
